The apparent corruption, abuses and inadequacies at all levels of the hierarchy. The three main causes for complaint were the Papacy, the secular clergy and the regular clergy all of which were accused of having many weaknesses. The popes of this time were accused of spending far too little time on spiritual or theological matters, as they were preoccupied with political and cultural affairs.

For example some were accused of being “secular-minded” and more interested in the expansion “of the papal dominions than in the reform of the church” which as another point of eroticism in regard to reform they apparently did not have the “perceptive leadership” the situation demanded and as a result “made matters worse”. The church seemed to have been diverted from the spiritual world by the corruption of the world leaving many followers of the church feeling neglected, which contributed to anti-papacy.

They were also criticized for using simony in one of the many strategies of which they were accused of in attempts to raise money to resolve cultural issues. One source even goes as far to say that it had become one of “the corner stones of papal finances” which is a huge criticism to the papacy’s supposedly moral Judgment. The reputation of the papacy was greatly damaged by this and some say their actions stimulated “pluralism, immorality and inattention to spiritual duty among the clergy as a whole. The papacy supposedly relied on the ignorance of the people in order to maintain their power, as they indoctrinated the message into them that the church was their only way into heaven. At this point in time many were predominantly soused on the afterlife and committed to reaching heaven, and therefore maintained a good relationship with the church, which was however based upon money.

In order to balance the budget they were spending on cultural issues popes sold more and more indulgences and dispensations, and even “set up whole college offices for sale”. Despite the Papacy’s success in bringing an efficient and orderly government by the early sixteenth century it had not come without consequence in the form of lack of spirituality and waning reputation as “the spiritual heart of the Christian Church. The secular clergy were also a cause for complaint, in particular the archbishops, bishops and parish priests, all of whom have their own criticisms.
