Beowulf's Obstacles and Themes.

Topics: Books

In the novel Beowulf the character Beowulf goes through a lot of different obstacles. There are multiple themes in the novel that reflect on Beowulf’s experiences. A big theme that was expressed throughout the story was Beowulf’s willingness to come back and fight for the Danes. By coming back whenever to fight for the Danes, Beowulf showed that he was a very loyal person.Beowulf first showed his sign of loyalty when the Danes called upon him and he decided to come and defend them in battle.

Beowulf did not make this decision because of the Danes, but instead he made it because he felt that he had to do it in payment for his own king from Geatland and also because of a family debt that he owes to Hrothgar. Hrothgar acknowledged Beowulf’s courage and loyalty by saying these words to him, “Beowulf, my friend, you have traveled here to favor us with help and to fight for us” (line 457-458).

When Hrothgar said this to Beowulf, he was thanking Beowulf for being loyal by coming to defend him and the Danes. This was the first sign when Beowulf showed off his quality of being a loyal person. Beowulf is not only loyal to Hrothgar whom he owed a family debt to, but also to his soldiers. Beowulf’s next sign of his quality of loyalty was at the end of his life when he passed down the throne to his soldier Wiglaf. Wiglaf was one of Beowulf’s only courageous soldiers in times that matter.
